A young Afghani girl, who lost her leg to a landmine, appears for the first time in this emotionally charged Japanese feature film. With the full cooperation of the internationally known company Nakamura Brace, maker of artificial limbs, an artificial leg was created for the girl, with the entire process dramatically depicted in this film.

“My country has been in a state of war long before I was born, so I’ve never known what true peace is like. But, if peace means release from the fear of mines and ability to walk anywhere freely, then I love peace.”

Hanaoka Izumi works as a creator of artificial limbs in Shimane prefecture. Her senior co-worker, Kubo, goes to Afghanistan to help give aid to children as a member of an NGO. Izumi decides to go along. In Kabul, the wounds of war are still fresh, with the debris of destroyed airplanes and tanks battered by sand-filled winds. But what stands out the most are the citizens passing by who are missing limbs and obviously suffering great pain.

While Izumi works busily in a clinic every day, she meets a girl named Pahrzatt who has lost a leg to a landmine. Izumi thinks, “I want to make an artificial leg that allows her to walk without a cane,” believing that restoring the girl’s ability to walk will go a small way to restoring peace in Afghanistan. Directed by Yutaka Osawa and starring deaf actress Akihiro Yonaiyama .
